The International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) was founded in 1966 in New York City by His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada. ISKCON is part of the Gaudiya Vaishnava tradition, which traces its roots back over 5,000 years to Lord Krishna and more recently to Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu (1486–1534), who emphasized the chanting of the Hare Krishna maha-mantra as the easiest way to attain spiritual enlightenment in Kali-yuga.
